By providing quality education, the foundation La Vecina gives the children in the district of La Boquilla, in Cartagena, a chance for a better future. Combining education with psychological support, as well as with social and recreational activities and events for the whole community. The foundation La Vecina is highly committed to the development of the children and wants to give them a secure environment where they can live and learn.
La Vecina exists since the year 2007 in La Boquilla and their activities are growing every year. The children and their parents appreciate this foundation a lot. The 10-year old girl Keisy said: “The foundation is good because the teachers are kind and lovely and they treat us very good, and they are not angry with us and they are always there for us whatever we need.”

The SOS Children’s Village was founded in Cartagena in the year 2008 with the implementation of a service that empowers the families with abandoned children or cases where the children lost a parent. In the year 2010 they extended their tasks, they opened a new program in the city of Cartagena, especially for these children and young people that lost their parents. For these children they offer a save place in a substitute family (SOS Family), where their process of development and empowering their capacities are supported, in order to be able to be a self-sustaining person and active member of our society.
Alternative Travel Cartagena SAS is proud supports the coconut ladies DAMARTES with visits and donations since 2013:
The project DAMARTES (Damas y Madres del Arte – ‘Women and Mothers of Art’) began with the name Madres – Cabeza de Familia y sus Cocos (‘Mothers – head of the family and their coconuts’) and is an association composed of seven women. In 2008, they took part in a craft class sponsored by the foundation ProBoquilla. Nowadays, they produce jewelry, containers, vases, belts and accessories and they are the first women of La Boquilla to sell these objects. Producing an object out of a coconut, requires above of all enthusiasm and patience. The life of the DAMARTES is very impressive. All of them are mothers, head of the families, and most of them already grandmothers with interesting revolutionary life-stories being the first group of women producing their income with something they make with their own hands. The association is a working group of great women that are able to craft amazing things from simple objects.
